I went into 2022 with no real running goals other than to have a first crack at an ultra marathon after missing my first due to illness in 2021. I increased my weekly miles and started running to and from work so I could clock a minimum of 100 miles per week and still have time to spend with my family. The year started well with a half marathon PB at the Cardiff Half Marathon in March, which also got me an individual bronze in the Welsh Athletics half marathon championships and a silver in the team championships. I conquered my first ultra in April by leading the Limitless Trails Blacks to The Beacons 50 mile ultra for 45 miles before a wrong turn and loss of concentration sent me on a 5 mile detour and a close third (officially 2nd) place finish. Then came July and my first 100 mile race, the Run Walk Crawl Dragon 100 from Rhosilli, Gower to Cardiff Bay. I ran through the night on the hottest weekend of the year and came out of the unknown with a course record, 1st place by around 3 hours and some amazing memories. My final race of the year was back on the road for the Welsh Athletics road relay championships. I completed the medal set with a gold medal for Swansea Harriers and recorded the 4th fastest lap of the day. Not a bad year overall and something to build on in 2023…
