I’ve started 2023 like 2022, with a 100 mile week to kick the year off. The turn of the year gives us a time to reset our sights and set new challenges for the 12 month ahead, like many people will have done. Whether those challenges are health and fitness based, performance based, work based, or relationship based, the period between Christmas and New Year and is a great time to set them. This year, I’ve set myself three challenges to accomplish and I’m excited by all three of them.
Number 1 is to run the Barry 40 mile ultra on the track in March. This is the Welsh Ultra Distance Championships and will give me a chance to test myself against the best in country over the ultra distance. Running 40 miles on a 400 metre track (160 laps) is a new challenge for me, but something I’m looking forward to doing. I’ll be doing some specific distance work on the track to prepare for it and will be sharing those experiences here and on my other social media pages. Number 2 is the British 100 km championships in Belfast in April. This is another lapped course, but this time on a ~4 mile loop around a park, so there's a great opportunity to run fast. I've been wanting to run a road 100 km ultra for some time now and this is the perfect opportunity. I feel like I can do well over the distance if I get the right training done and arrive at the start line fit and well. Most of my training will be gearing towards this in the first 3 months of the year and I'm excited to see what I can do. This will involve some long tempo sessions and getting used to maintaining a decent pace for prolonged periods of time. Another important part of my training will be fuelling strategies. As the intensity of the race will be high, I need to handle taking in a lot of fluids (water, electrolytes, and isotonic drinks) and carbohydrates, mainly in the form of energy gels. I'm looking forward to seeing how this goes, and learning some things in the process, and I'll be sharing my experiences across social media. Number 3 is an ongoing challenge…to support ActionCP by raising funds and promoting awareness using ultra running as a vehicle. I am very fortunate to be able to spend quality times with my young son and my wife but there are families who do not have this luxury. I've learned through working with children (and adults) with cerebral palsy that the lives of their parents change as they become carers for their children, as any parent would. I want to do something to help these families enjoy the times that I enjoy with my son. Action CP help 30,000 children with cerebral palsy and their families and will be doing a number of fundraising challenges moving forwards to promote awareness and raise funds for a great cause. This starts with the Fan Dance on Saturday 14th January 2023 where I'll be running 15 miles over Pen Y Fan, the highest peak in the Brecon Beacons, on a route made famous for SAS selection. I'll be seeing how close I can get to the course record of 1 hour 57 mins. You can help us in this fundraising journey by my GoFundMe page which is accessible here and via MY LINKS at the top of this page. What are your challenges/goals for 2023?
