It's been a while since I got some decent vertical distance in the bag on the trails, so this week I decided to get it done. With the weather being frosty and the roads being slippy, the safe choice was to get some miles in on the trails where the frost isn't as bad and the ground is more solid in these types of conditions. I headed out on the Gower this Saturday morning in zero degree temperatures with the aim of getting 1,000 metres of climbing done. The highest point on the Gower is around 190 metres so this could only mean one thing...hill reps! My hill of choice was Cefn Bryn. It's around 180 metres above sea level and the route from the sea to the top is around 1.5 miles, so it's perfect for reps. A technical challenge both up and down with some loose gravel and steep sections. A great workout. The 1.5 mile rep takes you from Three Cliffs Bay, up a steep gravel trail and then onto a stretch of tarmac through Penmaen. After passing a cattle grid, you're back on to a gravel trail for the final stretch up to the top of Cefn Bryn. As you approach the top, you pass a stone marking the opening of the Gower Way by Prince Charles (now King Charles III) and then you're rewarded by a stunning view of Oxwich Bay and West Gower. This is one of my favourite trails to run and this was a great workout. 17.92 miles, 2 hrs 33 mins, 1,149 metres climbed. This was an awesome technical workout on the trails. I'm looking to do some more trail racing next year so it was great to get this session ticked off. It's something I'll keep in my training next year. I will however start the year with the ultra road races as I take on the 40 mile Welsh Championships in Barry and the 100 km British Championships in Northern Ireland. Weekly summary: 104.31 miles 12 hours 51 minutes 7:24/mile average pace 2227 metres climbed
