After shaking off the illness that forced me to withdraw from Marathon Eryri in Snowdonia last month, I've managed to get back to normal. I took the rest that my body needed and had 7 days without running. I eased my way back in with a couple of easy runs and then decided to go for it and complete my first 100-mile week for 4 weeks. "Bloody mindedness got me through it..." Early mornings, plenty of miles in the dark, and bloody mindedness got me through it. The first few days were hard but once I'd logged 3 days where I ran twice (morning and afternoon), I was starting to feel back to myself. Throughout the week I kept my focus on that 100-mile target and was able to put aching muscles and a tired body to the back of my mind. I always know that the first 10-14 days back will be painful and when I get through them things start to click together. This was a great exercise in building some mental strength and resilience that will serve me well for ultra running. The icing on the cake was finishing the week off with a trail run along a section of the South Wales Coast Path. This was the first time I'd ran on this path since winning the Dragon Coast 100 this summer. Thanks to Run Walk Crawl for organising an amazing race that I would recommend to anyone looking to run a 100-miler. The weather was in my favour and the quiet and remote run was just what I needed to finish the week off. The South Wales Coast path is a great place to run with some tricky and technical trail mixed with flat stretches where you can really open your legs and drive your average pace down. The trickiest parts are definitely the stair climbs out of the bays, but it's great strength training, physically and mentally. Surprisingly, I managed to climb 384 m over 20 miles and it really was a good test to end my first real week back. "A good test to end my first real week back"
