This week I decided to take a slightly different approach to training. Work commitments took me to London for the week, away from my wife and son...a challenge I really don't like facing. To keep myself sane and make the week go quickly, I decided I'd run my 100 miles for the week in 5 days, leaving the weekend free to spend quality time with my family.

I wanted to take a post to write down some thoughts and experiences I had during my recent week off running due to illness.
After shaking off the illness that forced me to withdraw from Marathon Eryri in Snowdonia last month, I've managed to get back to normal. I took the rest that my body needed and had 7 days without running. I eased my way back in with a couple of easy runs and then decided to go for it and complete my first 100-mile week for 4 weeks.
After finishing (and winning) my first 100 mile race back in July this year, the last 3 months I focused on building up to Marathon Eryri in Snowdonia, the toughest road marathon in the world.
Training couldn’t have gone any better. I maintained 100-mile weeks for 12 consecutive weeks and increased the length of my weekly tempo sessions so that I was running 30 miles at target marathon pace (<6:00/mile) including elevation similar to what I would be facing in Snowdonia. |
