I wanted to take a post to write down some thoughts and experiences I had during my recent week off running due to illness. I spent a lot of time in the car as I wasn't able to do my usual run to work and back. For one, it made me realise why running to work is such a good option; it gives me time to think and to prepare for the day by getting my thoughts in order. It also gives me time to wind down from the day before I get home so I can enjoy time with my family. But secondly, the drive to work and back gave me a chance to listen to some ultra running/endurance podcasts and delve into the minds of others similar to me. I listened to one or two podcasts about eating while running ultras and came to the realisation that many people overdo it by a long way. I remember hearing Dean Karnazes say that you don't need to eat that much and I am definitely on his side of the fence on this one - some water and a couple of snacks will suffice, especially if you've conditioned your body to metabolise fat to a decent level. Some podcasters recommend eating gels every X mins and pizza and burritos at every aid station. I can honestly say that this isn't a practice I implement. I prefer to feel light and this makes me feel energised and able to run faster. But, then again, maybe the point of view of these podcasters is influenced by the nutritional products they sell! On the other hand, a very good podcaster I would recommend is Rich Roll. I was lucky to listen to his podcast on Mastering MINDSET where he recapped some his best mindset dialogues with various people. This made me realise that mindset is about taking action and it isn't all in the mind. The podcast went into detail about the chemical/hormonal response to facing something difficult and that the subsequent actions determine the final hormonal response - meaning that if you continue to make the right decisions it will become an engrained habit and lead to a strong mindset. Powerful stuff. I've linked to the podcast below for those interested... "Mindset is about taking action..."
