In the world of ultra running, every step is a testament to human endurance, and every race is a journey of self-discovery. Join me as I take you through my incredible experiences, from humble beginnings to setting records and chasing dreams. 1. A Humble Start: From Road Running to the Trails
It all began when my life took a turn – quite literally. When my son was born, sleep became a rare luxury. One restless night, while browsing YouTube, I stumbled upon mesmerizing trail running videos. The rugged terrains and serene beauty were captivating. It was then that I decided to step off the road and onto the trails. I thought, if these people can do it, maybe I can, so I set out to find out. 2. From Welsh Roads to International Trails: My Achievements My journey in ultra running has been marked by milestones: The Welsh 100 km Record and British Championships One of my proudest moments was setting the Welsh 100 km road running record and clinching third place in the British championships in my debut 100 km race. The race was an exhilarating challenge, testing my endurance and determination. That day, I remember coming round the bend on the final lap of the 21-lap race, and my dad shouting, “You’ve done it, Dan!” It was a race and a day to remember. 3. Balancing Act: Work, Family, and 100-Mile Weeks Ultra running isn’t just about races; it’s about balancing life’s demands. With a full-time job, a master’s degree, a family, and the goal of running 100+ miles every week, I had to find a way to make it work. The key? Sacrificing sleep and rising at 4:30 am, six days a week, to get those miles in, leaving time to commit to everything else that is important in my life. M Ultra running has made me stronger, both mentally and physically. Now, I train harder and for longer than I did as a road runner. It certainly has been a transformation. I enjoy pushing myself and now I’ve found a way to do it. 4. Training for the Trails: Tips for Aspiring Ultra Runners For those aspiring to tackle extreme distance races, here’s my advice: Start Small and Specific Begin with a 50k race; it’s only 5 miles more than a marathon! To conquer 50 or 100 miles, change your training routine. Running twice a day helps you get accustomed to running with tired legs, a vital skill for ultra races. 5. Trusting the Training Journey in Ultra Running In ultra running, success isn’t about lucky rituals; it’s about trusting the training process. Before big races, I taper my training to peak at the right moment. Each race, regardless of size, is an opportunity to grow and learn. This is even more so for smaller races where I can run there, race on tired legs and give my endurance a real test.. 6. Facing the Toughest Terrain: Trail de Guerledan Challenge One race that pushed me to my limits was the Trail de Guerledan in France. With 40 miles of relentless elevation changes, it was a true test of endurance. But in ultra running, challenges like these are where we find our strength. It was a great experience and one I would like to repeat in the future. I want to improve on my performance! 7. Future Goals: From Lakes in a Day to Lands End to John O’Groats My journey in ultra running continues with exciting goals: • Lakes in a Day, a 50-mile challenge in the Lake District. • Venturing into longer trail races, including UTS and UTMB. • A rematch with the 24-hour race. • The dream of running from Lands End to John O’Groats. 8. Ultra Running’s Impact: My Most Inspiring Moment In the world of ultra running, there have been countless inspiring moments, but one stands out above all else. It was the moment when I set the Welsh 100 km record and finished third in the British championships in my first 100 km race. It’s a memory etched in my heart forever. 9. Advice for Aspiring Ultra Runners: Taking the First Step My advice to aspiring ultra runners is to take that first step. Start with a 50k race, and gradually build your way up to longer distances. To prepare for 50 or 100 miles, adjust your training by incorporating double runs to simulate the fatigue you’ll experience during ultra races. 10. Trusting the Journey: My Ultra Running Wisdom In my ultra running journey, I’ve learned that there are no shortcuts or special rituals for success. It’s all about having faith in the training process, being adaptable, and continuously seeking growth with each step and every race. Thank you for joining me on this remarkable journey in the world of ultra running. It’s a path of challenges, victories, and endless inspiration.
